Psychology of Colour

For designer students I think you had known about psychology of colour in designing. Where each color has its characteristic, every colour has its own set of positive and negative connotations.

Actually, most of web designers didn’t give the psychology of colour much thought. That’s fine, but it should be your attention to know about psychology of colour. Just keep it simple, no need to go to designer university. I’ll give you short note about psychology of colour.

It’s important when you design your site. It’s not only about design, but also as part of your marketing strategy you need to evoke emotions with your audience. For example in adsense colouring, you could find out there, there’re so many articles and reports about how colouring could effects increasing adsense click-throughs.

It’s become more important when you design a landing page. An attractive color will make that landing page making a lot of sales and conversions. You can also practice it in many cases, there’re so many examples and cases that attractive color and match with the perception of audiences will make a lot of advantages.

Here are some of the positive and negative connotations of the main colours:

Blue
Positive: tranquillity, calmness, cleanliness, strength
Negative: depression, coldness, fear, obscenity

Red
Positive: passion, strength, power, love
Negative: arrogance, danger, anger, evilness

Green
Positive: nature, fertility, wealth, safety
Negative: envy, illness, inexperience, greed

Purple
Positive: royalty, mystery, pride, sensuality
Negative: profanity, exaggeration, confusion, mourning

Black
Positive: sophistication, style, modernity, power
Negative: absence, evil, death, remorse

Orange
Positive: warmth, energy, enthusiasm, playfulness
Negative: warning, arrogance, fire, aggression

White
Positive: purity, peace, innocence, simplicity
Negative: coldness, cowardice, unimaginative, emptiness

Yellow
Positive: happiness, optimism, hope, intelligence
Negative: cowardice, dishonesty, greed, illness

So you had known that colour is very important, and it has many benefits and advantages when you choose and use the attractive color and match with the perception of audiences. It will connect you with the exact emotions you are aiming for and lead to more conversions and a more successful website.

What do you think about the new theme?!. Previously I had made a poll that asks a question: “How Is My Site?”. And I got 15 answers:

  1. Good (33%, 5 Votes),
  2. Excellent (27%, 4 Votes),
  3. Can Be Improved (20%, 3 Votes),
  4. No Comments (13%, 2 Votes), and
  5. Bad (7%, 1 Votes).

But the question too general, it could mean: the design (theme and layout) and content. So now I create a new poll that asks a question about this blog design.

Nice to see you drop your opinion about this blog design ;) . And in a few weeks I’ll publish a wordpress theme for you that available to download. The theme will be colored according to this new blog theme.

If counted, I’ve found almost one hundred websites or blogs that provide free wordpress themes. Not all of them will be listed on this post, because I can’t remember all of them, I just remember and bookmark the best sites that provide great nice free wordpress themes.

I try to list the best sites according to my own preference. I try to list the best sites to find nice design of wordpress themes, and all of them are free to download. Here’s a list of sites that you’ll find great nice free wordpress themes:

2. wpdesigner.com

3. antbag.com

4. topwpthemes.com

5. wpthemesplugin.com

6. blogohblog.com

7. BlogsTheme.com

I’ve browse wordpress themes through those sites, and I found various nice wordpress themes; nice design and compatibility. I think I just found premium quality wordpress themes for free.

But you can get better and the best wordpress theme by using paid design service. You can redesign and make a custom theme, also you can make the theme unique and branded. So you could use paid design service such as: BlogOhBlog premium wordpress theme, revolutiontheme, ithemes, wpremix, etc.

Of course, the premium design has exclusive design, and you’ll need to pay to get it. Or you can make the free themes to become better, unique, and exclusive. In this case you need design capability: photoshop, html and css, etc. And for more unique and exclusive theme, just make your own wordpress theme. In this case, you need more knowledge and capability about web design and wordpress theme structure.

Stripe ad is a neat way to extend space to create additional advertising room, and the most popular position for stripe-ad is on top of page. It has extremely visible to the website visitor since it’s the first thing the visitor sees on the site.

It’s not seen as obtrusive advertising that interferes with the user experience of your blog or website. There’re numerous advertising types that interfere the visitors, especially popup ad (Pop-ups, pop-overs and pop-unders).

But it not always neat, and for some case it can be interference for the user experience, and people not liking it. However, stripe ad become interference is just for a little case, and the most people like it and it’s not interferes with the user experience.

Create your own stripe-ad

I use there files to create my own stripe-ad: stripe-ad.php, style.html (download or save this .txt file and rename to style.html), and close.gif. Stripe-ad.php is for creating ad message and calling the CSS style. Style.html is for creating layout style such as colors, position, font, and Javascript function. Close.gif has function as image link to close stripe-ad, it can seen at the right of my stripe ad (see the top right of page).

Put the stripe-ad

Put the stripe-ad.php between body tag: <body> … </body>. You can directly add the code between the body tag. Below is stripe-ad.php code:

You are done

Now you are done. For advanced user, for more attractive and good looking, you could edit the CSS style (style.html). Good luck! :)
