Maryland Heart Center – Mitral valve repair
UMMC always keep their values: Quality of Care, Excellence in Service, Respect for the Individual, Quality in Education and Research, Cost Effectiveness. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) exists to serve the state and region as a tertiary care center, to serve the local community with a full range of care options, to educate and train the next generation of health care providers, and to be a site for world-class clinical research.
UMMC will serve as a health care resource for Maryland and the region, earning a national profile in patient care, education and research, strengthened by their partnership with the schools of medicine and nursing.
Maryland Heart Center specializes in the surgical treatment of valvular disease, including mitral valve surgery. Mitral valve repair is used to treat regurgitation (leakage) or stenosis (narrowing) of the mitral valve.
As a leader in repairing the mitral valve, there’re about 92 percent of patients at the Heart Center will have their valve repaired instead of replaced. That’s well above the national average, where typically 55 percent of patients have their valve repaired. The many advantages of this approach include improved long-term survival rates and reduced risk of stroke, and freedom from long-term treatment with blood thinners.

I really did not have what I call pain. It was just a soreness that is so sore it hurts, it is hard to describe. My surgery took about 4 hours and I was in the hospital for 9 days. I only took pain medicine for a few days and did not take any after I got home except an occasional Tylenol. I have a mechanical valve so I also have to take Coumadin which is a blood thinner for the rest of my life.
You don’t necessarily have to go for surgery. I’m 30 years old and I was diagnosed early and I’ve never had any problems…don’t let a doctor try to push you into surgery unless it’s absolutely necessary…some doctors are “surgery happy”…be sure to get opinions from several doctors. Good Luck!
